Perino on cluster bomb treaty

December 4, 2008

This is a sore issue with me and brings to mind a very heated discussion I had at work with a few co-workers.   It started because I sent a co-worker an email about the Vatican being criticized for opposing UN decriminaliztion of homosexuality. Well my email was forwarded to another co-worker whom I still respect, even though he/she was wrong.

The Vatican is drawing criticism from gay rights groups and newspapers editorials after Archbishop Celestino Migliore, the Vatican’s permanent observer to the United Nations, told a French Catholic news service that the Vatican opposes “a proposed U.N. resolution calling on governments worldwide to de-criminalise homosexuality.” Migliore claimed that the resolution “would create new and implacable discriminations” against opponents of same-sex marriage. Critics call that position “grotesque“:

A strongly worded editorial in Italy’s mainstream La Stampa newspaper said the Vatican’s reasoning was “grotesque”.

Pointing out that homosexuality was still punishable by death in some Islamic countries, the editorial said what the Vatican really feared was a “chain reaction in favour of legally recognised homosexual unions in countries, like Italy, where there is currently no legislation”.

Franco Grillini, founder and honorary president of Arcigay, Italy’s leading gay rights group, said the Vatican’s reasoning smacked of “total idiocy and madness”.

Every single country in the European Union has signed the resolution, which was written by France. France is due to submit the draft declaration at the UN General Assembly on Dec. 10, the sixtieth anniversary of the UN declaration of human rights.

My co-worker (who the email was forwarded to) gave many mask for the reason why it was wrong for the UN to be involved in civil rights since protecting gays would be against other cultural (such as Iran or the Middle East in general) beliefs.

Well if you believe that, then the rest of the world need to F-off about America using cluster bombs.   It’s our right as a culture that believe in totally destroying our enemies that we should continue to use cluster bombs as we see fit.

When the cluster bomb story came out so did my self righteous rage.  If America must be concerned about the UN not being involved in civil rights then damn it to hell we have the right to protect ourselves with cluster bombs.  Heartless is the way to go, my cultural beliefs is on the line.  We should not have to be concerned about the undetonated cluster bombs that goes off years, months, weeks or days later, maiming and sometimes killing children.

Last time I checked you can not have it both ways. You can not claim the UN need to stay uncommitted to indulge in making policy that may offend other nations but can write policy that offend Americans (hawks anyway).  Civil rights is F#cking civil rights.

Simply put, either the UN is serving a real purpose or they are no more then just a sounding board.  Every country gets to come in and complain about what is wrong with no action or they pick up a pen and make a stance on all objectionable subjects.  They can not be called the UN if the subjects are cherry picked based off of hurting a countries belief system.  Either the UN has a purpose of doing something or they remain just a stupid symbol.
