America the Beautiful?

December 26, 2008

yosemite-valley-view-panoramaGranted, we do have some beautiful scenic sites in our country.  They are magnificent and majesty to be hold.  Yet, we also have azz wipes like Hannity, Rove, Rush and others telling us that investing in our infrastructure is a waste of money.

transitms1531No offense to the walking and talking jerks of our time, but I’d liked to ride a train that spent less time derailing and that actually had some speed.  About a little more than a year ago it rained in NY.  It was a deluge of rain and guess what?  It shut down mass transit in NY completely for half a day!  In fact that is a common occurrence in NY.   It can be rain or manhattan_bridge_black_and_white1snow and our mass transit tanks.  I won’t even speak of the countless times subway escalators have been broke.  Every time I take the D train, which uses one of our major bridges to get from one borough to the other, I pray that the damn thing (bridge) doesn’t collapse.

I find no offense in America building green for our living in the 21st century.  What’s wrong with schools being upgraded?  What’s wrong with better bridges and roads?  What’s wrong with updating our technology?  In fact, what the hell is wrong with us living in the 21st century?  Just like black and white TVs are a thing of the past, so is outdated plumbing, roads, bridges, transportation and technology.

While the likes of Rove was busy wasting our country’s money on a pointless war and aiding in bankrupting a nation, our bridges were collapsing, levees breaking, gas pipes rupturing and building crumbling which only added to needless deaths throughout our country.

It is very much time for us to update our country and join other countries that have done so:

I stood on a rocky hilltop overlooking the South China Sea and talked to my wife back in Maryland, static-free, using a friend’s Chinese cellphone. A few hours later, I took off from Hong Kong’s ultramodern airport after riding out there from downtown on a sleek high-speed train — with wireless connectivity that was so good I was able to surf the Web the whole way on my laptop.

Landing at Kennedy Airport from Hong Kong was, as I’ve argued before, like going from the Jetsons to the Flintstones.

It’s time to upgrade.
