As the World Crumbles…We Pretend It’s Not happening?

January 15, 2009

mudge-bsI want to once again address what’s going on in Zimbabwe.  The crisis is of epic proportion.  I know we as a nation have plenty of trouble at home and really can’t take the time to look at what’s going on beyond our borders; but, if you can give a fig about Israel and Gaza then you need to open your heart to what is going on in Zimbabwe.

The fact that the situation is so scarcely reported should send up warning flags.  That we would invade a country (Iraq) for no reason but let one that is perpetrating a horrible injustice go unnoticed only shows just how disgusting President Bush’s administration has always been.  Here’s what the Physician’s for Human Rights (“PHR”) has to say about the situation.

PHR found that the Mugabe government has withheld food aid, seed, and fertilizer to rural provinces in order to starve political opponents; that the regime nationalized and then withheld routine support for municipal water and sewer systems from cities that elected political opponents; that the health care infrastructure and the economy itself is nearing utter collapse; corruption is the rule not the exception; and that the regime brutally silences critics to cover its crimes, profound corruption and incompetence (see report here).

“While we were there,” Frank Donaghue, CEO of Physicians for Human Rights told Religion Dispatches, “human rights activists were imprisoned and tortured.”

“People think that the most compelling problem is cholera,” he said (and indeed, the cholera outbreak has been widely reported). But, adds Donaghue, it is also a symptom of more profound underlying problems. “The issue is the collapse of the government, the economy, and the health system” he said. “Human waste is running down the streets. Kids are playing in it. The sewage system is in such bad repair that you get sewage in tap water.”

  1. It is a dam shame the US turns its back on this situation and at the same time pours money into the hands of the Israeli military to slaughter thousands of innocent victums. The people of the US should accept nothing less than a major change from this sickness. We have sat idle and watched all of our US officials support these dumb ass wars in the middle east wasting funds that could help this situation.

“A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual death.” MLK

  2. There are so many countries that have people living in sub-human conditions. It is truly tragic. It is disturbing to think of the good that the U.S. could’ve done with the money spent on the unnecessary Iraq war. My heart goes out to the people subsisting and hanging on day after day with no hope for the future, much less for a today.
